What I Taught A Church Full Of Members That Changed How They Saw Their Phones

I walked into The Great Church for the SPARK event on the 28th and 29th, ready to spend two afternoons at 2PM teaching something most of the members had never considered learning inside a church building, digital skills.

SPARK was created to empower members with practical, income relevant skills, and I was given two full days to cover four areas: content creation, graphic design, affiliate marketing, and mobile videography.

Day One: Turning Phones Into Tools

I (and my team) started with content creation and graphic design because most people already had the tool they needed sitting in their pocket. I showed members how to think about content the way brands do, and how simple, free design tools could help them create graphics that look intentional instead of thrown together. For many of them, this was the first time they realized their phone wasn’t just for scrolling, it was a business tool they had been underusing.

Day Two: From Watching To Earning

On the second day, we moved into affiliate marketing and mobile videography. I explained how affiliate marketing works as a way to earn without needing to create a product first, and how mobile videography, done right, can compete with expensive equipment when the storytelling and structure are solid.

What I Noticed Across Both Days

By the second day, members were coming back with phone screenshots of graphics they had made overnight, or ideas for products they wanted to promote as affiliates. That kind of quick action told me the sessions weren’t just informative, they were activating something.

Why I Said Yes To This One

Teaching inside a church setting is different from teaching at a tech event. The room isn’t full of people trying to build startups, it is full of people trying to provide for their families and grow personally. Being able to hand them practical, usable digital skills over those two days at SPARK reminded me why I love teaching in spaces that don’t usually get this kind of access.
