The WordPress Dashboard Mistake I Watched Beginners Make (Until I Showed Them Otherwise)

The Eket WordPress Community invited me for a hands on session on navigating the WordPress dashboard, and within the first ten minutes, I noticed almost everyone in the room was making the exact same mistake without realizing it.

The Mistake That Was Costing Them Time

Most attendees were clicking around the dashboard the way someone explores an unfamiliar house, room by room, hoping to stumble on what they needed. Nobody had actually been shown what each section was built for, so they were wasting time on tasks that should have taken seconds.

What I Walked Them Through

I turned the session into a hands on walkthrough rather than a lecture. We went screen by screen through the dashboard together, and I showed them the sections that matter most day to day, from managing content and media, to understanding plugins and themes without breaking their site by accident.

I paid close attention to the parts beginners usually fear touching, especially settings and permissions, and showed them how to make changes confidently instead of avoiding that section entirely out of fear of “breaking something.”

Watching The Fear Turn Into Confidence

The biggest shift I saw wasn’t technical, it was emotional. People who came in nervous about touching certain parts of their dashboard were, by the end, clicking through sections on their own and asking “what does this do” instead of avoiding it altogether.

That is always the moment I am aiming for in a hands on session, not just information transfer, but confidence transfer.

Why Sessions Like This Matter To Me

A lot of WordPress teaching online focuses on advanced tricks and plugins, and skips the basics that make people afraid to even open their own dashboard. Spending that time with the Eket WordPress Community, going back to fundamentals, reminded me that real impact often happens in the simplest sessions, not the most advanced ones.
