I Taught A Room Of Young People How To Build A Brand With Nothing But A Phone

Youth Alive Foundation Africa organized Digital Marketing 101 to equip young attendees with skills they could use immediately, and I was there to teach them how to build a personal brand using tools most of them already had in their pockets.

The Belief I Had To Break First

Before I taught a single strategy, I had to break a belief that was sitting in the room, the idea that a personal brand requires money, equipment, or connections they didn’t have. I told them plainly that the biggest brands they follow online started the exact same way they were starting, with a phone, a story, and consistency.

What I Actually Taught Them

I walked the attendees through the foundation of digital marketing for personal brands, starting with identifying what makes them different and worth following in the first place. From there, I showed them how to use content to build visibility, how to communicate value instead of just posting for the sake of posting, and how consistency, more than talent, is what separates people who grow online from people who quietly quit after a few weeks.

I kept everything practical. No jargon, no theory they couldn’t apply the same day. Just steps they could start using with the phone already in their hand.

What Changed In The Room

By the end of the session, I had attendees asking questions that told me they had already started thinking like brand owners, questions about content ideas, how often to post, and how to stay consistent without burning out.

That shift in thinking is what I was really there for.

Why This Session Stayed With Me

Young people are often told to wait, wait until they have more resources, more experience, more certainty, before they start building something for themselves. Teaching Digital Marketing 101 with Youth Alive Foundation was my way of telling that room they didn’t need to wait for anything they didn’t already have.
