The Skill Monetization Strategy I Shared At DevFest Uyo 2023

DevFest Uyo 2023 was full of developers and tech enthusiasts talking frameworks, tools, and trends. I came with a different focus, skill monetization, and the room’s reaction told me it was a conversation that needed to happen.

The Gap I Noticed In The Room

Most attendees were skilled. Some were still learning, others already working, but a good number of them had one thing in common, they had no clear structure for turning what they knew into consistent income. They had skills sitting idle while they waited for the “right opportunity” to show up on its own.

What I Taught That Day

I walked the audience through skill monetization strategies built around the same structure I use inside the LAskill Courses. I explained that monetizing a skill isn’t about becoming an expert first, it’s about packaging what you already know in a way people are willing to pay for, then improving as you go.

I broke this down into practical steps, starting with identifying a skill worth monetizing, positioning it for a specific audience instead of everyone, and building simple offers around it instead of waiting to build an elaborate business first. I used real examples from LAskill students who had gone from learning a skill to earning from it within weeks, not years.

What Shifted In The Room

By the end of the session, the questions weren’t about which programming language to learn next. They were about how to start charging for skills people already had. That is always the sign a session has done its job, when people stop asking what to learn and start asking how to earn from what they already know.

Why I Keep Bringing This Message To Tech Spaces

Tech events often celebrate skill acquisition and stop there. I use every opportunity like DevFest Uyo to push the conversation further, because a skill that never gets monetized is a missed opportunity sitting quietly in someone’s head.
